Faculty of Agriculture, Alexandria University
Since its inception in 1942, the founders of our college had an immediate task and a long-term dream. The task was simple: to establish a modern college of Agriculture in Alexandria with the purpose of serving Egypt's needs in the fields of agricultural education. The dream was for the college to become a leading agricultural educational and research institution in Egypt and the Middle East region. The mission of the college at that time was simple: to educate and train young students on the production technologies used in agriculture and prepare them for employment mainly in the Ministry of Agriculture and other governmental and non-governmental agencies as well as private farming.
Today, sixty seven years later, the college has grown significantly to become an impressive, versatile and multitalented knowledge institution involved in education, research and community service. It was thus imperative that we develop a clearer vision of our future, revise our mission and objectives to addresses the new challenges in the field of agricultural education and related fields. We are currently modernizing the college’s undergraduate program to be in step with the most recent advances in science and technology related to the broader field of sustainable agriculture, natural resources management and rural development as well as meeting the needs of the changing job market in Egypt and the region. The objective of this modernization is to produce graduates of a high quality whose education and training are highly relevant to society’s needs and who have the technological skills that are highly sought after by the labor market. Emphasis in curricular revisions will be on skills of problem solving and on skill sets that are transferable to a diverse employment sector. The new educational programs respond to public concern over issues such as food safety, nutrition, environmental protection and sustainability of natural resources.
In addition to our relentless efforts to improving our educational and research facilities and infrastructure, we are continuously reviewing our educational programs to be more market-driven i.e. curricula is being redirected to address the labor market demands locally, regionally and internationally. Our new curricular reorientation attempts to incorporate both the new role of market-oriented agriculture as well as issues of direct relevance to food security and rural poverty in Egypt. We are continuing to improve the education process through taking full advantage of the new advances in information technology and apply them to enhance the education process in the college. Finally we have taken some significant steps to attain quality assurance and accreditation of the college’s educational program.
